: This paper first addresses the urgency of developing urban GIS to tackle the problems caused by urbanisation; then review the current state-of-the-art of the development of urban GIS across the country. INTRODUCTION Since the first report of a geographical information system (Tomlinson, 1967), which marks the commencement of GIS industry, thirty years ago, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have found wide applications in almost all geographically related disciplines such as resource management, urban planning, environmental management, facility management and so on. GIS has become a fast growing industry. Urban is one of the major application areas of GIS. In many developed countries, associations of urban GIS (e.g. URISA in USA and AURISA in Australia) have been established. Indeed, specialised conferences on urban GIS (e.g. URISA conference) have been held regularly and journals for urban GIS (e.g. URISA Journal) have also been published.
