HIV/AIDS Stigma, Denial, Fear and Discrimination: experiences and responses of people from African and Caribbean communities in Toronto

THE STIGMA STUDY RESEARCH TEAM: Clemon George ; Dennis Willms ; Darien Taylor ; Robert Remis ; Sylvia Adebajo ; Frank McGee ; Anna Pancham ; Edith Jacobet Wambayi. COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Vuyiswa Keyi, African Community Health Services ; Beatrice Nday wa Mbayo, Centre Francophone de Toronto ; Senait Teclom, Women’s Health in Women’s Hands Community Health Centre ; Hiwot Teffera, People to People Aid Organization ., A report from a study of the same name that took place between 2004 and 2006 which covered men and women from the Ethiopian, Kenyan, Somali, Guyanese, Jamaican and Trinidadian communities. The report analyzes the perceptions of HIV infection, the implications for infected individuals within those communities and the social and health care contexts within which HIV-positive people live and obtain treatment and support. It includes recommendations from participants for improved handling of the issues that affect them., This study was supported by a grant from the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN).
