1st World Symposium on Logistics in the Forest Sector. Helsinki, 15 - 16 May 2000, 235 - 250, We outline the needs of a wood-refining company with regard to timber transport truck routing and scheduling. The operational context and needs for vehicle routing in forest sector companies are described. We show that the problem has many features not present in the general vehicle routing problem or its most common variants, which makes the application of general-purpose vehicle routing software cumbersome if practical at all. We then propose a set of constraints that a solution to the vehicle routing problem in this context must satisfy, and discuss the possible form of the cost function. We also state, based on our experience, some more general requirements regarding the performance and data needs of a vehicle routing system. The role of vehicle routing and scheduling as a part of a holistic optimization of a wood-refining company's operations is discussed shortly., We outline the needs of a wood-refining company with regard to timber transport truck routing and scheduling.
