The effect of the ingestion of a high potency pancreatic lipase preparation to lower the fat tolerance curve in dogs and men, appears to be mediated through an increase in lipolytic activity of the blood. Studies utilizing rats fed a C14-labeled triglyceride meal suggest an alternate mechanism. With pancreatic lipase supplementation, the rate of absorption of lipid is increased about 30% in the early phase of absorption then decreased at a later time. In a six hour post-feeding experiment, the overall rate of absorption was decreased by about 30% as measured by comparing the areas under curves of blood radioactivity and also by C1402 expiration.
