This report describes the Relation Browser tool evolution and testing, and makes suggestions for long-term implementation. This work has been reported at national conferences (e.g., National Conference on Health Statistics, July 1999, International Conference on Establishment Surveys, June 2000, and papers are in press for others (see Marchionini, 2000 for a briefing that summarizes the interface design work of the four years; Marchionini et al., for American Society for Information Science Annual Meeting, November 2000; and Marchionini et al., for ACM Conference on Universal Usability, November, 2000). This work took place from September 1999 to June 2000 and had three primary objectives: a) Continue development of the Relation Browser to improve the transition between overview of federal statistics and data previews and identification in specific webpages. b) Test next iterations of the Relation Browser to determine how the new levels of interaction it 4 supports influences information seeking. c) Explore how the Relation Browser techniques can be easily adapted for specific statistical sites such as the BLS website. |
