Lentigo maligna is an intra-epidermic melanoma that occurs on sun-exposed skin. The gold standard treatment for these lesions is surgery. However, surgery is sometimes difficult because lentigo maligna is frequently widespread. Furthermore, esthetic and functional reconstruction is often difficult because of the location of lesions on the face and the necessary margins (5mm). Moreover, these lesions appear on eldery people who often have anaesthetic contraindications. In any case, the extent of lentigo maligna tends to be underestimated in particular because the periphery of the lesion is not always pigmented. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.
