Storm clouds are gathering over nursing. The NHS is once more under pressure to save money. In 2009 McKinsey, an international management company, published a report outlining how the NHS could make efficiency savings of £20 billion, i.e. 20%, over four years (HSJ, 2009). The government at the time implemented the report but the current government did not rescind these changes. NHS cost pressures began to grow as budgets were cut to meet 'efficiency savings'. There were promises that frontline services would be spared and cuts would fall on management. Sadly, this is not the case (Williams, 2011). |
