Gravelle (1984) describes the pitfalls that can arise in the specification of empirical models of mortality rates. This paper concentrates on the low birth rates in the United States, a major correlate of the infant mortality rate and a continuing source of concern for health policymakers, and attempts to provide a methodological framework that addresses the issues raised by Gravelle. |
