Abstract/OtherAbstract:
Interventions that are routine at births around the world may be "unhelpful, untimely, inappropriate, and/or unnecessary" according to a WHO expert group. Only interventions that support the process of normal birth should be used and many that are poorly evaluated or potentially harmful should done away with. WHO's Technical Working Group on Normal Birth met in Geneva from March 25 to 29 this year. The group came up with a working definition of what normal birth includes and assessed whether various routine interventions really do bring benefit to mother or infant. In quite a few cases, the group found, interventions that are routine simply cannot be justified. Since most births are normal it is both wasteful and wrong to treat them all as if they were complicated, the members of the Technical Working Group said.
