Compliance is a major problem in connection with the use of antipsychotics. Slow-release injections were therefore developed in the 1960s. As a result of a substantial reduction of water solubility, the active substance diffuses slowly from the injection site so that a therapeutic serum concentration is assured throughout the period. New studies show that this treatment can reduce the risk of patients requiring hospitalisation and of psychotic relapses compared with the use of tablets. |
