The Thermo Cardiosystems left ventricular assist device is a very effective "bridge" to orthotopic cardiac transplantation in a select patient group. Because of the increasing shortage of available donor hearts nationally, the ability to bridge people to transplantation is very desirable. Also, this device does not require systemic anticoagulation and, to date, has not been associated with any embolic events in any of the 40 patients who have undergone implantation of the device. |
