We report a case of Münchhausen syndrome diagnosed by FDG PET/CT. A 39-year-old woman presented with high fever, myalgias, and severe illness. On physical examination she was noted to have multiple subcutaneous abscesses. F-18 FDG PET/CT demonstrated multiple subcutaneous and intramuscular areas of increased tracer uptake, consistent with abscesses. Additionally, multiple broken injection needles were noted in various localizations. The infectious lesions were self-inflicted. Early and correct diagnosis of factitious disorders might prevent unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and might allow for timely and adequate psychiatric treatment. |
