Abstract/OtherAbstract:
This document summarizes the various legislation which was enacted with regard to sterilization. The state where the bill was enacted, the bill number, as well as the sponsor are listed. Of the legislation enacted, some of the highlights included the following. The required 30-day waiting period between the request for voluntary sterilization and its performance was repealed. Also lifted was the requirement that health facilities request that certain nonmedical qualifications be met by those desiring sterilization. Another bill makes it a felony to perform or aid in a sterilization of a person under 18 unless it is unnecessary or unavoidable. Sterilization upon written request is available to anyone other than a minor, mentally incompetent, or someone with similar disability. Another bill which was passed allows any parent, guardian, or other authority responsible for a mentally incompetent to petition the court for an order authorizing sterilization.
