Abstract/OtherAbstract:
Recent studies have concluded that there are no differences in birth or sex ratios related to use, duration of use or interval between discontinuation and conception in oral contraceptive users. Pills do not have an adverse effect on the pregnancies of women who have taken them or on the babies born to them, even when pill usage was discontinued within 2 months of conception. Twinning occurs twice as often among women who have used oral contraceptives. It seems that hormonal use prior to pregnancy will not cause increased chromosomal or congenital abnormalities. The use of hormones during pregnancy, though, may cause such abnormalities. For this reason, hormonal contraceptives should not be used to treat threatened abortion or to determine pregnancy. Women who become pregnant while taking oral contraceptives should be warned of the possible risk.
