Abstract/OtherAbstract:
It would appear that many people are of the opinion that the arrival of the new century will mean the disappearance of maternal mortality. Unfortunately, that is not the case. In this paper the direct and indirect causes of maternal mortality are presented, successful strategies are described and the challenges for society and midwives in the new century are laid down.
