A new Maternal and Neonatal Health Center which aims at helping governments and other agencies involved in maternal health evaluate the issues of providing maternal care and identify the possible impacts of a given intervention was established by Family Health International (FHI) in July 1992. As part of its activities, the center plans to critically examine some traditional ideas of maternity care, such as the impact of training traditional birth attendants on maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity in Ghana. The center will also provide technical assistance to governments and other agencies working in the area of maternal mortality and undertake needs assessment in collaboration with other agencies working in maternal and neonatal mortality. FHI, which has been involved in maternal health activities for over two decades, has helped hospitals in developing countries to monitor the quality of maternity care they provide and to analyze their own data in order to identify and resolve hospital problems. A maternity care monitoring package (using EPI INFO) is available to hospitals and clinics on request. The Center is headed by Dr. Judith Fortney who can be contacted at Family Health International, PO Box 13950, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, USA. |
