Abstract/OtherAbstract:
Rehmannia Six Formula (RF) is a formula which is commonly used to treat patient with diabetes in Traditional Chinese Medicine. A search in PubMed was performed for the years from 2000 to 2009 using keywords including RF, Rehmannia glutinosa, Corni fructus, Dioscorea alata/Dioscorea opposita/Dioscorea batatas, Poria cocos, Alisma orientalis/Alisma plantago aquatica and Paeonia suffruticosa/Cortex moutan. The formula appeared to have beneficial effects on blood glucose, neuropathy and nephropathy. Findings suggestive of its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties have also been demonstrated. Whereas there are many studies on compounds extracted from individual herbs, there are not many studies on RF as a formulation. As there is preliminary evidence that RF may be a useful supplement to prevent diabetic complications, clinical studies are warranted. For clinical studies in the future, preparation details are recommended to be listed thoroughly and the ratio of RF should be standardized so that the results are comparable.
