Reply to Lutrin: Decision-making in colorectal surgery.

We thank Dr Lutrin for his comments. We agree that differences exist between hypothetical answers and real world behaviour, and we intend to conduct a prospective study ascertaining to what degree they differ. However, we would like to point out the dearth of data in this area and the observation of the authors that many decisions made during surgery are the result of rational and irrational factors. With regard to the point on gender, several of the survey respondents commented on the questionnaire that it was an important consideration in their decision-making process.
