Radiofrequency intravascular ultrasound uses radiofrequency backscatter data to determine the sub-plaque anatomy and composition of coronary atherosclerosis and hence permits plaque classification. The thin-capped fibroatheroma is associated with future major adverse cardiovascular events, emphasizing its biological importance.
