Pre-treatment with α-tocopherol and Terminalia arjuna ameliorates, markers of inflammation, cardiac and apoptotic markers in experimental myocardial ischemic rats.

Myocardial infarction is becoming a leading cause of mortality worldwide. This study evaluated the cardioprotective potential of the combination of a Terminalia arjuna bark hydroalcoholic extract (HETA) and α-tocopherol in isoproterenol-induced myocardial ischemia in rats. Myocardial ischemia was induced by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (85 mg/kg body weight) for two consecutive days at an interval of 24 hours. Rats given isoproterenol showed elevated serum levels of malondialdehyde, cardiac markers (creatine kinase MB isoenzyme, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, Troponin I, and lactate dehydrogenase), markers of inflammation (interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor), and apoptotic markers (Bcl-2/Bax) when compared with control and combination treatment (HETA and α-tocopherol 100 + 100 mg/kg body weight) groups. Pre-treatment with the combination significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the elevation of these markers in serum and cardioprotection was further confirmed by histopathological studies. The combination treatment also augmented the endogenous antioxidant profile of the heart. The cardioprotective effect of the HETA/α-tocopherol combination treatment could be due to its anti-lipid peroxidative, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties.
