Abstract/OtherAbstract:
The successful management and exploitation of fisheries requires detailed knowledge of the population dynamics and life histories of commercial species, and of the factors affecting recruitment and mortality. Much progress has been made in recent years, exemplified by the report of the 1984 Dahlem Workshop on the exploitation of marine communities, and by subsequent research discussed in this article. In some fisheries at least, management decisions can now have a firm scientific base.
