To the Editor: Redelmeier et al. (Sept. 27 issue)(1) report the association between physicians' warnings to unfit drivers and a significant increase in patients' depression, as measured by the rate of emergency department visits for depression. Driving cessation has been correlated with increased depressive symptoms(2) and social isolation(3) and a decreased sense of control.(4) Understanding the risks and benefits of this intervention should be an important consideration in a physician's decision about recommending to a patient that he or she stop driving.
