An association exists between congenital heart disease and urinary tract anomalies. We present the case of a 15-year-old female patient with a known VSD (ventricular septal defect) and Eisenmenger syndrome. Pulmonary embolism was clinically suspected and the patient underwent a ventilation/perfusion (VQ) scan. As expected in a right-to-left shunt, some of the injected Tc-99m macro-aggregated albumin particles bypassed the pulmonary vessels and lodged in highly perfused areas of the systemic circulation, specifically the brain and the kidneys. Unsuspected crossed renal ectopia was discovered on lung perfusion images, which was subsequently confirmed by a Tc-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid study. |
