INTRODUCTION: Research into neuropsychological impairments among the in-patients suffering from Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has experienced, in the past decades, a huge step forward in providing neuropsychologists with wide field of knowledge on the changes found in the cerebral and cognitive capabilities of these patients, as well as their reversible or static features, yielding a characteristic profile of neuropsychological impairment in AN. DEVELOPMENT: We present a review up to December 2010 of the results found in the studies on impairments, both in the morphology and in cognitive abilities, providing us with a comprehensive and interventional framework to increase future research. CONCLUSIONS: The studies to date show morphological and functional cerebral changes among the inpatients diagnosed with AN, but have still to clarify whether these changes occur after the onset of the disease or, as later research shows, are one of its causes, and could be on the basis of the illness leading to a tendency to develop anorexic symptomatology. Later studies show a neuropsychological network with impairments in the prefrontal and right parietal cortices as a characteristic feature, giving those capacities and their related cerebral areas a major role in the onset and development of the illness, and to help us understand AN from a brand new theoretical point of view.
