Mark Joseph Schoenberg is known for his leadership and several important contributions to ophthalmology: 1) He performed the first retinal detachment operation in the United States; 2) he established the first glaucoma clinic in the United States; 3) he was the chief founder of the New York Society for Clinical Ophthalmology; and 4) he innovated the standardization of Schiotz tonometers.
