Brought up in a small Shropshire village, Ailsa says she enjoyed most subjects at school, but particularly English, Geography and Chemistry. However, in a possible early pointer to her subsequent career, she says she had "always been interested in food"; her mother was trained as a home economics teacher and, from an early age, Ailsa herself wanted to be a chef.
