ION-MOLECULE REACTIONS: ANALYTICAL AND STRUCTURAL TOOL.

This is the first review that has been published on the analytical applications of ion-molecule reactions (IMR) in Analytical Chemistry. Gas-phase IMR are not a common tool in most analytical laboratories, as they normally require substantial modification to the mass spectrometry hardware. Despite this there has been a significant increase in the number of publications on this technique in the last three years thus making it a very relevant topic for review. Previous reviews on the analytical utilities of IMR were published by Lebrilla1 and Brodbelt2 in 1997. Since then several more focused reviews on IMR of specific compounds and/or using specific instrumentation3-6 have appeared. In this review we are going to discuss the literature published in the past three years, focusing on analytical and structural applications of this technique towards organic and biochemical analytes. We will omit reviewing publications with a focus on the kinetics and energetic of ion-molecule reactions nor will we cover the literature related to metal ion-ligand interactions. The most exciting developments in the analytical utilities of IMR in the past three years have arguably been the OzID technique pioneered by Blanksby's group7 and identification of specific functional groups present in analytes developed by Kenttämaa and co-workers.8-12 These two areas will be devoted special attention in our review.
