The gliding bacterium Sandaracinus amylolyticus, strain NOSO-4T, was recently characterized as the first representative of a new myxobacterial genus. A screening of the culture broth for antibiotically active metabolites followed by isolation and characterization revealed two unique 3-formylindol derivatives, indiacen A (1) and its chloro derivative indiacen B (2). Both are active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as the fungus Mucor hiemalis. The biosynthetic origin of the isoprene-like side chain in 1 and 2 was studied by in vivo feeding experiments with (13)C-labeled precursors. |
