In trying to trace the basis for my early interest and work in the field of biomechanics, I was struck by the uniqueness of the Stapp organization and its members. One of the most puzzling aspects of the organization is that a group of primarily engineering-oriented scientists has devoted itself to one of the foremost public health issues, namely, that of accidental vehicle-related injury. In many respects, this interest and activity pre-empted most of the leading medical organizations and publications. I will trace the formation and growth of this crusade against injury and death in what is one of the most significant developments in the history of public health accomplishments. |
