Herbaspirillum canariense sp. nov., Herbaspirillum aurantiacum sp. nov. and Herbaspirillum soli sp. nov., three new species isolated in Tenerife (Canary Islands).

Three Gram-negative, motile and slightly curved rod-shaped bacterial isolates, SUEMI03(T), SUEMI08(T) and SUEMI10(T), were isolated an old volcanic mountain soil in Tenerife (Canary Islands). The three strains are able to produce siderophores in vitro and were phylogenetically related with species of genus Herbaspirillum from which their close related species was H. seropedicae. The identity of 16S rRNA gene sequences ranged from 99.2 and 99.6% among the strains SUEMI03(T), SUEMI08(T) and SUEMI10(T) which presented, respectively, 97.5, 97.8 and 97.7% identities with respect to Herbaspirillum seropedicae DSMZ6445(T). The three strains grew optimally at 28°C and contain C(16:1)ω6c and C(16:1)ω7c summed in feature 3, C(18:1)ω6c summed in feature 8 and C(16:0) as major cellular fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of the strains SUEMI03(T), SUEMI08(T) and SUEMI10(T) were 61.6%, 60.4 % and 61.9%, respectively. The strains SUEMI03(T), SUEMI08(T) and SUEMI10(T) presented DNA relatedness lower than 60% among them and than 30% with respect to H. seropedicae DSM 6445(T). In spite of their common geographical origin the three strains isolated in this study presented several phenotypic differences among them, presenting a phenotypic profile highly divergent to that of H. seropedicae. Therefore we propose that the strains isolated in this study represent three new species of genus Herbaspirillum named H. canariense with the type strain SUEMI03(T) (=LMG 26151(T) and CECT 7838(T)), H. aurantiacum with the type strain SUEMI08(T) (=LMG 26150(T) and CECT 7839(T)) and H. soli with the type strain SUEMI10(T) (=LMG 26149(T) and CECT 7840(T)).
