To the Editor: El-Serag (Sept. 22 issue)(1) recommends that for diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with cirrhosis, lesions greater than 2 cm in diameter require one study with typical imaging features, whereas lesions 1 to 2 cm in diameter require concordant findings from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These recommendations appear to be based on the 2005 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) guidelines.(2) More recent guidelines by the AASLD recommend that if lesions greater than 1 cm in diameter appear to be typical for hepatocellular carcinoma (arterial hypervascularity and venous or delayed-phase . . .
