To the Editor: Agus et al. (Sept. 27 issue)(1) report that targeting a blood glucose level of 80 to 110 mg per deciliter (4.4 to 6.1 mmol per liter) in critically ill infants and toddlers (<3 years of age) after cardiac surgery did not alter the clinical outcome. Although the target range for the blood glucose level was "normal" in fasting adults, it indicated hyperglycemia in infants (normal range, 50 to 80 mg per deciliter [2.8 to 4.4 mmol per liter]). Published results from a study targeting age-related normal fasting blood glucose levels in patients in the pediatric intensive care . . . |
