The Study of Antidepressants in Parkinson's Disease (SAD-PD)(1) is only the second multicenter double-blind treatment trial(2) for depression in Parkinson disease (PD), and the first in North America. Although there have been calls to sensitize neurologists to the problem of depression in PD, the result being that 20%-25% of patients with PD are taking an antidepressant at any given time, until recently there have been no data to suggest that it is a treatable problem,(3) a situation that still exists for depression in Alzheimer disease.(4) Given how common depression is in many neurodegenerative diseases and neurologic conditions, the paucity of research and positive treatment studies is alarming.
