Geriatric medicine in Europe: towards professional and training paradigm.

Geriatric medicine is a subspecialty of internal medicine concerned with the health and well-being of older adults. Specific for geriatric medicine is the need for comprehensive geriatric assessment which is promoted as the key for successful preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Geriatricians possess specific skills which are necessaryto achieve high professional standards in the acute and chronic medical care and rehabilitation for the older subjects. A paradigm of both undergraduate and postgraduate training in geriatric medicine in the European Union has been explained in this contribution.
