ED experts say that we can learn from the key developments of the past 20 years to help improve the way EDs operate in the future. Here are a few suggestions for adapting to the challenges that have arisen: Develop physician leadership of the triage process to reduce lengthy delays on the front end of the care process. Support modification in liability legislation to lighten the burden placed on EDs by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). Design new EDs or expansions to accommodate the needs of elderly patients, who will comprise a much larger segment of the patient population. |
