Abstract/OtherAbstract:
Many older people have type 2 diabetes, reflecting the growing ageing population and the rising prevalence of obesity. Type 2 diabetes is associated with high morbidity and mortality and yet many older people with diabetes do not achieve good glycaemic control or receive attentive care. But while glycaemic control is important, there is evidence that older people gain greater benefit from additional treatment to manage their cardiovascular disease and hypertension (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), 2008). However, diabetes management is not easy because older people are likely to have multiple problems including cognitive impairment, falls with injuries, and depression. Confusion and dementia complicate good self-care and make adherence to new behaviours and minimizing of adverse events challenging for all concerned.
