Abstract/OtherAbstract:
Here are some important points for hospital CFOs and CNOs to consider when measuring a department's productivity: Hours per patient day (HPPD) is a robust and easily calculated measure of productivity. Case mix and acuity do not necessarily need to be factored into a good productivity benchmark; they are difficult to collect in real time and don't always have a direct impact on HPPD. HPPD is easily adjusted to reflect the labor demands of outpatient and observation services.
