We have read with interest the discussions between Manceau (Environ. Sci. Technol. 46, 2882-2884)and Peak and Regier(Environ. Sci. Technol 46, 2885, 3163) with regard to the interpretation of the Fe L-edge spectrum of ferrihydrite. We draw on some experimental datasets to demonstrate that the ferrihydrite L-edge spectrum may be explained by octahedral Fe alone. The limitations of using summations of Fe L-edge XAS in applications to poorly crystalline sites, where the components are imperfectly understood, are discussed. The limitations of using summations of Fe L-edge XAS to interpret the Fe configurations of poorly crystalline materials with more than one Fe coordination are discussed, particularly applicable when the components used are imperfectly understood.
