This survey of anesthesiology has been prepared by almost 100 British, American, Canadian, and Australian authors, whose reports are presented in 81 often abbreviated chapters. These two volumes together weigh more than 12 pounds, yet when they are read, they are found wanting in many respects. The editors report in their preface that the work was designed for physicians preparing for the final phase of the British specialty examination in anesthesia.
