The amniotic fluid index (AFI) is frequently discussed antenatally, often in the context of an impending highrisk delivery. At the same time, the determination of the AFI and the potential impact on perinatal outcome may not be well understood by the neonatal team. An initial literature search on the AFI revealed 624 articles, which were then narrowed to 73. Although the AFI was first defined in 1987, it continues to be a topic of research and debate in the obstetric literature.
