Presents an obituary for Alfred A. Baumeister (1934-2011). Alfred A. Baumeister, professor emeritus at Vanderbilt University, died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on March 14, 2011, at the age of 76. Al was an extraordinary academician-dedicated to advancing the field of mental retardation as a researcher, scholar, teacher, and leader in a career that spanned over four decades. However, Al was also strongly devoted to mentoring students, both graduate and undergraduate, many of whom became leaders in the field of psychology and educational administration.
