Unite/CPHVA has been holding a series of free workshops with health
visitors and team leaders on the health visitor implementation plan,
with excellent feedback from attendees.
Lead professional officer Obi Amadi said: 'These were really positive events. Some attendees turned up with scepticism about the plan, but I hope that all left with greater clarity and knowledge of what to expect and the part that they will be able to play in making it happen.'
The sessions were planned with the support of the Department of Health (DH) in order to increase understanding of the 'call to action' and explore how members could make use of it to increase staffing and improve services. At the time of going to press, events had been held in Leeds, Derby, Birmingham, Torquay, Sunderland, East Malling and Liverpool with a total of over 270 participants, while the final workshop of the series was yet to take place in London. Comments from attendees so far included 'Great to get the national information-feeling more confident that things will happen' and 'Professional representation has been really motivational and encouraging'.
Professional officer Dave Munday stated: 'Members clearly look forward to implementation and the benefits it will bring to the children and families that they serve. The event gave them the opportunity to raise concerns and hear first-hand responses from the DH that they can use to inform managers and commissioners.'
Dave added: 'Once we complete a final event in London on 1 August, all regions will have have been broadly covered. However, we hope to be carrying out another round of events in a few months' time to look at how this important work is progressing for our members, as this was one of the most frequently asked requests from event attendees.'
