Full Text: WVU Hospitals' Sleep Evaluation Center has been fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate the services provided by a sleep center or laboratory. The accreditation is valid for five years.

To be accredited by the AASM, a sleep center or lab must display and maintain proficiency in testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.

The Sleep Evaluation Center, the largest in the area, is among 14 accredited centers in the state, providing services that identify and treat sleep-related disorders. The state-of-the-art facility is located at Ridgeview Business Park in Morgantown. It opened in August 2008.

"We offer testing and treatment for all types of sleep disorders," John Young, M.D., WVU neuropsychiatrist and medical director of the center. said. "Some common disorders include snoring, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and excessive daytime sleepiness."

The six-bed center treats about 1,200 adult and pediatric patients a year.

Individuals experiencing sleep disorders need a referral from their physician to be seen at the Sleep Evaluation Center.
