Full Text: The State of Vision, Aging, and Public Health in America is the newest report published by the Vision Health Initiative of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It summarizes the prevalence of vision loss and eye diseases reported by people aged 65 and older and provides information about access to eye care, health status, and comorbid conditions among older adults. Data were collected from 19 states that answered the Vision Impairment and Access to Eye Care modules of CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a telephone survey that annually tracks health risks in the United States. This report is described as demonstrating that people with vision impairment are more likely than people without vision impairment to report overall poorer health and age-related health conditions--including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
