The need for a local PA education programme is also being
considered, as part of the demonstration. Australia's first PA
degree programme at Queensland University has just dosed because of
difficulties recruiting a programme director ,following the resignation
of the inaugural director. A group of 11 students on the inaugural
programme graduate this month, with another 23 students scheduled to
graduate next year.
Announcing the closure, clean and head of the School of Medicine, David Wilkinson, said it was also because of the "significant uncertainty" about the future of PA workforce in Australia and the associated financial risk.
"This was a very difficult decision to take, not least because of our commitment to health workforce development and reform, and our significant investment in developing the first PA programme in Australia," Wilkinson said.
Gorman said the closure of the Queensland programme may mean New Zealand could recruit some of its graduates. He does not believe the closure will make it harder to establish a PA programme here--"the local politics are quite idiosyncratic': He doesn't think there would be any difficulties recruiting a programme director either--"quite the opposite in fact"
The Middlemore Hospital PA demonstration will be evaluated in October and with the results made public.
