NZNO has developed a position statement on new primary health care
(PHC) service models. The statement grew out of a need within the
organisation for a clear set of principles that would allow staff and
members to assess any future PHC models. It will also provide NZNO with
a yardstick to determine its support for any proposed changes to service
The Evolving Primary Health Care Services statement was endorsed by the NZNO board of directors at its June meeting and is supported by NZNO's college of primary health care nurses. NZNO will continue to advocate for universal and equitable access to PHC.
The statement outlines 11 conditions under which NZNO will support the development of any new models. These include staff (clinical and administrative) being able to assist in developing options and proposals; having nursing positions included in clinical governance structures, with opportunities to extend, enhance and develop nursing practice; the development of equitable services to Maori and high needs groups; and financial savings to be redirected into clinical service delivery.
The full statement can be found on the NZNO website www.nzno.org. nz/services/resources/publications.
