The NMC has started to collect data on the ethnicity, disabilities, sexual orientation and religion or beliefs of its registrants.
Unite/CPHVA lead professional officer Obi Amadi stated: 'We have been calling on the NMC to collect data on the diversity of all nurses and midwives for some time now and we are happy that it has finally taken steps toward this. We encourage members to inform the NMC of their details. Organisations that do not have such records should follow suit and begin collecting this information.'
The NMC has devised a diversity questionnaire for registrants and at the time of going to press, it had already received 6100 returned forms. To complete the questionnaire, please see: www.nmc-uk.org and click on 'Equality and Diversity'.
Winners of the Mary Seacole awards, which recognise outstanding services for black and minority ethnic communities, are due to be announced on 21 October.
