Full Text: A ten-year cohort study of patients undergoing their first assisted reproduction cycle was conducted to measure success of in vitro fertilisation. The study included all IVF, ICSI and cryo-cycles with embryos derived from frozen oocytes, and followed all enrolled patients until live birth or discontinuation of treatment. A total of 3,011 women treated between 1998 and 2007 were included, to whom 2,068 children were born. The cumulative live birth rate was 52% after three cycles (the median number of cycles per patient), 72% after six cycles and 85% after 12 cycles. The study shows that assisted reproductive technologies can reach natural fertility rates, (1) but questions of cost, affordability and accessibility if so many cycles are required remain.
