Farmington, WV physician Dr. John Manchin II, D.O., has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). Dr. Manchin, a graduate in WVSOM's first class in 1978, is an active member of the WVSOM Alumni Association. His appointment was made by Governor Joe Manchin III.

"We are thrilled to learn of the Governor's appointment of Dr. Manchin to our Board of Governors," WVSOM president Richard Rafes, J.D., Ph.D. said. "He has been supportive of our institution's mission. He is knowledgeable about our institution and is an active alumnus. We look forward to working with him as he assumes this important position as a member of our Board of Governors," Rafes said.

Each public university and college in West Virginia is supervised by a Board of Governors (BOG). Each BOG consists of three elected representatives--one each from the faculty, classified employees and student body--along with nine lay members who are appointed by the Governor. BOGs are charged with determining, controlling, supervising and managing the financial, business and education policies and affairs of the state institution of higher education under its jurisdiction, as well as developing a master plan for the institution.

"I am delighted to welcome John Manchin, D.O., a member of WVSOM's first graduating class, to the Board of Governors," WVSOM BOG chairman Rodney Fink, D.O., said. "There is no one better qualified or more dedicated to the School than Dr. Manchin, of Farmington, W.Va. He has dedicated his life to service for West Virginia and he will be an extraordinary leader on the Board of Governors. Welcome home, John."

The keynote speaker at the School's annual White Coat Ceremony and Convocation in September, Dr. Manchin has been in family practice in rural West Virginia for over 30 years. He opened the Manchin Clinic in Farmington in 1979. In the summer of 2008, he extended his medical services to Fairmont at the Manchin Clinic South. Manchin and his son, John Manchin III, are partners in the clinic, and his daughters--Angela and Christina--also work there as physician assistants.

Dr. Manchin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from West Virginia University in Morgantown. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is past president of the Board of Trustees of the West Virginia Society of Osteopathic Medicine and remains a current board member. He enjoys traveling, golfing, reading and spending time with family and friends. He also has his private pilot's license.
