Salus University alumnus Le Dan Bach Viet died January 2, 2011.
Despite the challenges of being visually impaired and adjusting to a
second language, Mr. Viet arrived in Philadelphia to pursue a
master's degree in orientation and mobility (O&M) in 2004 as
part of the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program. He
returned to Vietnam as the only U.S. credentialed O&M specialist in
the country and began a busy career. He taught O&M at the Nguyen
Dinh Chieu School for the Blind in Ho Chi Minh City, wrote articles for
newspapers and magazines, appeared on television, attended conferences,
and began to make inroads in personnel preparation by working with the
Ho Chi Minh City Teacher Training University to develop an O&M
course. In April 2010, Mr. Viet coordinated a meeting of 36
representatives of Vietnamese schools for blind students, universities,
and students with visual impairments. When he became ill, he was
developing a countrywide network for O&M training among teachers and
students with visual impairments, and he did not let cancer stop his
work. What turned out to be his final O&M workshop was held just
before his death. "To the final week, Viet was still teaching
...," said Minh Kaufmann, director of the Center for Educational
Exchange with Vietnam, which administers the Ford Foundation
International Fellowships Program, "He fought to the end to give
others what he knew." For more information, contact: Salus
